On shooting a three-point basket at the game-ending buzzer to carry her team, the University of North Carolina, to the National College Athletic Association's women's basketball championship. Smith had made only eight of thirty-one three-point attempts all season; her coach was Sylvia Hatchell. Trailing 59-57 with less than one second left to play, North Carolina beat the favored team from Louisiana Tech 60-59.
