A Calm Reasoned Speech

Poem By Raymond Farrell

Today
As I sit
Under the locust tree
Allowing my lunch to digest
I see the evidence
That autumn has arrived
In Hangzhou
The days have remained
Warm and humid
But dried brown leaves
Now litter the ground
The nearby plum trees
Are almost denuded
And in the top branches
A lone bird
Decides to express
His opinion about life
He has chosen
To give a calm reasoned speech
About what appears to be
A well thought out argument
He goes on about 3 or 4 minutes
And then calmly flies away
Besides myself
I see no other creature nearby
But perhaps
He was merely rehearsing
What he wanted to say
And has flown off
To deliver the formal speech
To a waiting audience
Somewhere else.
