A Song I Heard An Immigrant Singing

The clock is set on 4 am
The sheets kicked off the bed
An anthem screams on the t.v. screen
There’s an ache all in me head
If I never hear the seagulls crying
If I never cry myself
If I never see your face again
I guess it’s just as well

And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just want you to know
That I love you, dear
And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just want you to know
My heart’s with you there

The hands that turn the lottery
Are the hands that turn the tides
And the hands that turn the timeclock’s hours
Are the hands the pick the sides
They're not the hands pealed and calloused
Hoisting up the bales
Or the hands hard and reddened
From driving down the rusty nails

And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just want you to know
That I love you, dear
And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just thought you should know
My heart’s always there

If we could go back to the glenns
And kick off our shaggy shoes
We would stare up at the passing clouds
Sing the fisherman's blues
I would drag you through the city streets
And up the boggy lanes
Talk of spitting on the talking heads
And curse the ferry lines

And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just want you to know
That I love you, dear
And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just want you to know
My heart's with you there

The island has gone silent now
The old ones are all gone
The young ones are all out of school
And working up along
And the flag that flies in tatters
From a forgetten fishing stage
Is the flag that flies in the dusky skies
In some city far away

And if I never get home
And I may never go
I just want you to know
That I love you, dear
And if I never get home
And I may never go
I’ll probably scream
Loud enough for you to hear
