Abide, Abide

‘abide, abide, ’
she whispers
to the sun.

‘come out, come out, ’
she begs,
‘do not stay away
too long.’

‘begone, begone, ’
she claws
at engulfing clouds,

‘I need
your incandescence
upon me.
I yearn to know
your beams.’

she can whimper,
and she can cajole.

because she is but a child,

she can still ask ‘why? ’
so fiercely.

she can still rage at
unfairness.

but,
she is here.

the sun is there.

all she can do is hope,
whisper,
wait.

and often,
as she must learn,
it isn’t
enough.
