Adam, Put That Fruit Down

I blame Adam for eating Granny Smith's, or was it Gala Red?
That apple of knowledge he bit into, of which the Bible said
Knowledge is progress is destruction is evil

We could have been so free with hearts so wild
Instead we live this adulthood when we're really just a child
Tinkering with science we don't really understand
Playing 'being God', life and death in our hands

We should be one with Nature
But instead we fight against her
Each advance makes us stronger
And makes us live longer
Or gives us the power to kill
From the far away safety of a fortified hill

The gap between rich and poor widening
Taking life for granted, the food that we eat
Our mountains of grain from our crops of GM wheat
Forget all those hungry in the desert with no shoes on their feet

They're starving - so what. We put a man on the moon
They're starving - so what. We can grow a clone
They're starving - so what. We can move real fast
They're starving - so what. We're first, they're last

We're in first place
We're leading the race
We're flying through space
See the moon has a face
But that ain't the smile we think we see
It's a whince at our mis-use of technology

That knowledge changed our instinct
Now we rush to be extinct
With our bombs and our bullets and our warming of the globe
We're hurtling to destruction, but we only seem to find
More ways to speed it up, 'cos with science we are blind
We microwave the planet and we're burning our own skins
Bombard ourselves by satellite so we can use our mobile phones
And watch more crap T.V. to drain the marrow from our bones

In this age of accountability where some-one must be blamed
I say it's Adam who should be standing in the dock
Him biting that crisp apple now means scientists run amok

But we can't change what's happened
Can't go back to that first day
And stop man from choosing knowledge
Make Adam throw that fruit away
Because we haven't cracked time travel
Well, not yet, anyway.
