American River Canyon #22

Dream tired long afternoons
where silence filters through trees.
Shadows shift with wind
reveal last few blooming poppies
starting to droop September heat.
Red tailed hawks circle,
looking for quick meal.
Circling on afternoon thermals
enoying ride, as much as, looking for food.
A cougar, stalks along nameless creek
belly tight
needing enough for cubs.
Sun falls beneath western ridge
bats come out
diving for insects
over driveway. A pot of coffee
announces dinner.
