And Yet

Come miles and yet I stand where I ever stood
Come from one continent to another and yet I live where I have ever lived
Come from one version of my self to yet another and here I am

Just like you, I carry my baggage
Heavy and getting heavier
We neither of us can leave it just yet

I’ve unpacked mine, again and again
To examine its contents

Trace over the familiar contours
Of happiness and pain

No more contact, no more contact
The threat was repeated until I saw it as a distant promise

One day, some time ago
I found that my baggage contained things I had not packed
Things that had been packed for me
Things I no longer need
Things I never needed

I set about unpacking
Tried to discard the things I had not packed for myself
The things that had been packed for me
The things I no longer need
The things I never needed

Having left so many things by the side of the road
I have walked miles and yet I stand where I ever stood
I have come from one continent to another and yet I live where I have ever lived
I have come from one version of my self to yet another and here I am

I pack and unpack myself
And no longer can tell what I packed myself
And what was packed for me

And yet
I walk along the road and carry my baggage
Some of it I packed myself
Some of it was packed for me
But I made the bags.
