Behind Closed Doors

Poem By Dónall Dempsey

Behind the closed door
of the bathroom

I’ve decided
to come clean

holler out at the top of my voice
all the Country & Western tunes known to humankind.

“And when we get behind closed doors
then ya let your hair hang down

And ya make me glad
that I’m a man! ”

Suddenly the door
is kicked open

as if it were
the Secret Song Police

I instinctively cover
my Charley Pride.

“My God...wot’s wrong! ”
you burst in upon my rendition.

“I’m singing! ”
I state the obvious

And to prove the point
sing again.

“And ya make me glad
that I’m a man! ”

“I’m singing ‘bout you! ”
I explain.

You wince & smile

and without
taking off your clothes

step delicately into the bath

and make me
glad that I’m

a man.

“Oh no one knows what goes
on behind closed doors! ”
