Betrayed

Poem By Jan Houston

a bruised
lemon moon
hangs
in tendrils
of black smoke
arcing toward
an unseen dawn

a barren tree
lifts scattered fingers
filigreed against
a starless backdrop
tensed
to the winter sky

a single lamplight
beckons
not to me
cannot invite
a spirit
from this cold
starched
loveless night

what mystery
dares glow
behind these
luminous
snow clouds
despite
my empty heart?
