Black Like Your Luggage

Poem By J. James Martinez

I told you the truth
And now I write this
Burned
Peeling and red

Run away
Hide your head and shield your ears
These words are stones

You’re marked
Black
Like your luggage

If
And
Surely when
You’re on your face
Or knee-deep in the beach
You can read
My laugh
Or my praise

I told you the truth
And now I write this
Burned
Quiet and learned

Black
Like your luggage
