Can'T Change Who I Am

Poem By Katie Huntress

i walk in clothes you don't like,
i hangout with friends you don't like,
why can't you just excpet the way i am,
i can't not change, its who i am,

this is who i am,
the person i am growing up to be,
don't you understand,
i am who i want to be,
can't you just let it go,
because this is who i am,
you can't change a thing.

you let her walk in skimpy clothes,
when all i want to wear is black,
she goes and dates older men,
when i only date guys my age and you still won't let it go.

you don't have to worry,
don't you want me to be happy?
if you do then let it be.

this is who i am,
the person i am growing up to be,
don't you understand,
i am who i want to be,
can't you just let it go,
because this is who i am,
you can't change a thing.

I really liked this poem. I can't really tell who it was you were talking about, but my dad is the same exact way. It's like he expects me be to be a totally different person that who I have become. And then looks beyond who I really am because he doesn''t like what he sees. I totally understand where you are coming from. This was a great poem. I really enjoyed reading it, I can relate to it so much. Great job, Crystal
Is this about what people at your school think, or your parents, or just all people in general? I wrote a poem kinda like this, but it wasn't really good. I like this poem. It really says alot.
You should read Mary Oliver's 'The Journey'. Typo in line 3: except = accept
Nicely expressed, Katie. Keep up the good work! Gershon
Aww, this reminds me of my 13 year old. She will only wear really big baggy, darker colored clothes. She hates to do her hair, of course don't wear make-up or anything........it took awhile for me to realize it's ok....that's who she is. It's hard when you're the mom and see your beautiful daughter not show the world her beauty, almost be hiding it. Great poem. You really hit me here. Sincerely, mary
