Bare branches stark against the sky.
A labyrinthine tracery
Of twigs and twiglets which defy
The winter gales successfully.
As they have done for centuries
And will no doubt for years to come
A barrier of living trees.
Which still provide a home for some
Small wild creatures seeking safety
A sheltered spot where they can hide
In relative security
From dangers threatening outside.
They form their own communities
Within the hedgerows boundaries.
