Den Joe Of Lisnaboy
Though not well known outside of Cullen for he was rather shy
A hero of my childhood was Den Joe of Lisnaboy
He lived alone on his small farm a lonely sort of life
Though some men are far better off 'twould seem without a wife.
For some men to matrimonial vows do not wish to be tied
And Den Joe he was one of those his freedom he enjoyed
When he came home from a Cullen pub no woman at the door
To say where have you been to all night you've been gone five hours or more? .
There was much to like about Den Joe he was as good as gold
And if he still lives on today he must be getting old
His hair once dark as raven's wing might now be silver gray
For time on anyone doesn't wait and each man has his day.
A gentle giant of a man he had the strength of two
And the more I got to know Den Joe the more my wonder grew
I once saw him hold a three year old steer for an injection from a vet
In an open yard without a crush something I won't forget.
The memory of people from our past fade with each passing year
Though some of them we won't forget their spirit to us near
And one of those a gentle giant and kind of heart though shy
A hero from my childhood years Den Joe of Lisnaboy.
