Dream Of Water

Poem By Dónall Dempsey

The water laps
the bedroom bedside table

postcards & letters
float by as if

that was how
they were delivered

photographs pushed this
way & that

by invisible currents

as if the people in the picture
had escaped the boredom
of the family album

and forsaken their quiet life
for a life beyond

what they could have ever known

...now lie becalmed again.

A stranded cat
snarls at the water’s touch

which laughs

at the rag doll crying for help
in a parallel universe.

The ordinary day to day

the unordinary moments

dancing surreally

with this dream of water

...this dream...of...water.
