You came like the swift-footed Hermes
by Geraldine Fernandez
A master thief in the daylight
A divine thief of hearts who does not miss
Swift as sparrows in their terrified flight.
You came like the chief-god’s thunderbolt
Forged by reckless passion unknown to gods
Fresh and radical as though love’s revolt
Striking the earth’s lassies and lads.
You came like Dionysus’ wine
Intoxicating the soul, body and mind
Like the maenads devouring bloody shreds of flesh
You tear men’s hearts into pieces with such relish.
