How shall I serve a One who is all-wise?
Some greatest One? An oldest and most strong?
How shall I fly for what I sympathise,
But die for He who most ensnares the throng?
Would all such service but for mine be vain,
Where merely piety made greatness great?
Unless without my knees yours all were lame
Then what came lately surely could come late.
No wider did your prayers expound the land;
No truer did observance paint the sea;
The days that burn, burn hottest in the sand
When kissing trampled stones; so I stand free.
I cannot serve a Lord whose love demands
Such faith, and yet without it would not be.
