For Michael

Poem By Elizabeth Starling

The song of the summer is sung by the trees
Borne on the wind by the birds and the bees
Echoed in music of streams rushing there
Singing come home OH ! man from Kildare.

The mountains are clothed in mantles of blue
Green are the valleys with shamrock anew
"Cead Mile Failty" his old friends say there
Welcome home OH! man from Kildare.

By Crocht' a na graine down Askinraw lane
Lilacs and hawthorns bloom once again
In a little thatched cottage a colleen waits there
With love in her eyes OH! man from Kildare.

The old church is waiting its bells they will ring
On a May morning the people will say
God bless you Michael and your bride so fair
Live happy for ever OH! man from Kildare.

For Alice

We walked to school,
Our Al and me,
A good three miles or more
Through the land, across the lea,
