Growing Apart

I'm standing on a wooden dock
Beneath a dark'ning sky,
Listening in silence
As the water rushes by
And whispers every story
That my memory can tell;
The ones I hold in fondness
And the ones I know too well.
I sit myself upon the edge
And feel the water part
Around my ankles, splitting paths
As surely as our hearts.
I fall asleep, and I sink deep
Into the ocean's stream.
It takes me further from my plans
As swiftly as I dream.
I lay to rest my now-past best
And sleep beneath the sky.
I'll wake beside the water
With the ocean in my eye.
