House Of Cards

Poem By John Macleod

The masks were well fixed
shrouds of concealment:
smiles and laugher
that purged the glint of keys
unlocking doors of deception.

he hid his secrets
under tiles
some were winners—
some were failures

she hid her secrets
in deep dark crevices,
stark shadows
submerged in fear.

One day
their house of cards collapsed;
he was face down in the dark
she faced up— toward the light.

Their hands were clasped tightly.
