Hymhs Of Joy
I heard a whippoorwill last night
sing his wonder of the world.
The forest hushed,
caught in the spell
conjured by the whippoorwill.
At dawn his song could not be heard,
but in its place two cardinals sang
of love and light and nested grace.
And those who dared not hum last night
in deference to the whippoorwill
trilled and purred and sang their songs
in contrapuntal repartee.
I felt the joy heard in these hymns,
sung by forest denizens
who speak a language that echoes life
and moves my heart to sing.
