I Hope It Is You

Friends in times of tribulations
Are as scarce as pennies in the pockets of a pauper

When you are in the sunny side of life
Friends are many like pebbles on the sea shore
But when you run into life’s cruel storm
Friends are as scarce as teeth in the mouth of a nonagenarian

We all shall have wintry days
When we shall need somebody to sing us lullaby to sleep
Like a little baby
When we shall desire the warmth of love

I hope it will be you
That will comfort me when I cry
Bottle-feed me when I am hungry
And rock me like a little baby

I hope it is you
That will cover my nakedness
Wipe my tears when I cry
And the only companion I see
When I carry my burden on the forlorn road

Burden, we all must carry
In this mixed journey of life
Just like an ass carries its own
Uncomplaining
We all must learn to bear the pains
On the road, even as we savour the joy

Will you feed me from the crumbs on your table?
Or place before me a sumptuous meal
When the cruel hands of hunger
Push me to your doorsteps

Will you laugh when I cry?
Hiss when I groan?
Scorn me when am in need
Or mock me when am suicidal

Stretching a hand of friendship
Could lighten the burden
On the shoulder of the afflicted
Saying a kind word
Could save a soul
On the brink of suicide

So, I hope I can count on you
When darkness comes
And draw strength from you
While awaiting the approaching dawn

Martin - In these difficult times compassion will be our most critical resource. It is now obvious that 'but for the grace of God, there go we all.' Thanks for the reminder. Blessings to you - Cheryl
