I Watched The Balloon

I Watched The Balloon

i watched the balloon as
it made its skyward ascent
not knowing how far it would go
how high
knowing only that it would
the way i know
2 and 2 is 4,
birds fly,
leaves fall in autumn

the balloon went onward
until it remained only
as small as the hole in a needle
small enough that i could not
push thread through
without licking it smooth
and before i completed
the similie, it was gone
the children
waving goodbye halfheartedly
returning to the party

it is autumn
and leaves are falling
there will be
other balloons

Beautiful concept. First stanza really stands out in my mind..
