Icy Fingers

Poem By Marilyn Lott

A cold front came by one night
That morning the air had such a chill
I stoked up the wood stove
The wood box I’d have to fill

I looked out at the trees
An ice storm had grabbed ahold
Of everything in its way
Oh my, it was so cold

There was a gentle layer of snow
Upon the icy ground
Winter had arrived for sure
The evidence was all around

I saw the dog I love so much
Down the road a ways
He’d stop and glance back
It’s kind of how he plays

I’d warm him a bowl of milk
I thought to myself
Reached inside the fridge
Plucked milk from off the shelf

I smiled as I thought about him
What a darling he’d turned out to be
Had him since he was a puppy
He was such a good friend to me

I opened the door and he glanced up
I knew he wouldn’t linger
When the tree limbs were covered
In what looked like icy fingers!
