In The Darkness Of The Night

Poem By gershon hepner

In the darkness of your night,
try recalling all the brightness
of the days when things felt right,
and being had a special lightness
that lifted you so far above
the clouds, it seemed you were in heaven,
reborn each day, it seemed, with love,
as if November 27
was every night and every day,
and every afternoon as well.
This is the record you must play
when fools tell you to say farewell.

For Diana, written at 11.30pm, November 25,2007, a day that will forever live in bitterness for everyone who ever met her husband Peter. Some of the imagery is derived from Bob Dylan’ “Girl of the North Country”.

Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all.
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.
