In The Doorway

I watch from the top of the stairs
As his head disappears quickly between the heavy doors
No doubt running swiftly (world class marathoner)
Down the stairs, fleeing into her waiting arms
Rejoicing in this new oasis he’s found after traveling in my desert

I watch him go
And when he looks back to wave to me (polite until the end)
I watch the rapture settle on his face
At the promise of freedom
The thought of dangling his feet in her clean waters
Resting in cool shade
The time to heal his battered ego
My heart a myriad of pieces

I watch him go
The smile on his face once for me
Now utterly
