Kiss Me Today

Life is confusing
When your heart is sad;
It is difficult to distinguish
Who your true friends are
And who are merely interlopers
Meddling to step in,
Maneuvering for positions of advantage.

I’d like to go back to a simpler time,
Fill my mind with poetry,
Gaze out into the sunlight
From an afternoon window,
Ride a horse and carriage with you
Until the world was true.

But I’ve been exiled in a cruel country,
Cutting my teeth on the sour fruit
Of dissipating dreams and vanished youth,
My unshaven face has a humble grace
But I do not think you will kiss me today.

True romance and hard times, dreams and aging, whiskers and kisses - none of these are mutually exclusive. But I hear you...

Uriah - lost love causes us to look back in awe at what used to be. In the process, we miss today and all its splendor. Your face may be unshaven, but you have achieved a state of grace, and that's worth everything! Heartfelt and hauntingly beautiful. Linda
This is right there with Keats, Yeats or someone of a 'simpler age'. 'Cutting my teeth on the sour fruit of dissipating dreams' and 'unshaven face has a humble grace' are absolutely beautiful, Uriah, and I'm not just saying that because I'm your favorite six year old. :) You know, of course, that there never was a simpler time, but it makes for dreamy dreams and very fine poetry. This is going into my favorites. Cheers, Lori
