La Tempe Derner

I watched
The mountain fall
Its rocks like gigantic leaves
Bouncing their teeth
Screaming like hoards
Of Hollywood Indians
Dive-bombing with laughter
Down the pathways
To the depressed rivers.

I wrapped my children
Of heartache
Into blankets of hope
Told them not to be afraid
As the darkness clawed in.

And snatched each one of them from me
One by one
By one.
