Love Me Very Much

I know they'd like to kill me:
they love me very much.
I know they'd like to still me
with mourning's deepest hush.
I know they'd like to kill me:
they love me very much.
I know they'd like to free me
to death's eternal touch.

What good am I? To anyone!
I'm a useless human being.
A body fully paralysed;
an eye that lolls unseeing.
I know they'd like to kill me:
they love me very much.
I know they'd like to free me;
their burden and their crutch.

I'd really like to help them,
but I can only watch.
My lonely eye keeps weeping.
That too is nature's botch.
But an agile mind is working
to find the perfect way.
No moral choice is lurking.
All fear and guilt assuaged.

I know that they support me
in that I choose to die.
But an evil law would thwart me.
I know their hands are tied.
I know they'd like to kill me:
I've asked them many times.
But a selfless act of mercy
remains a doleful crime.

I know they'd like to kill me:
they love me very much.
I know they'd like to will me
from life's ironic clutch.
I know they'd like to kill me.
I know they mean me well:
to put an end to suffering,
to ease a tortured hell...

One can only guess at what it would be like, David, but you put the feeling of it so very well. A very emotional piece of work. Sincerely Ernestine
Emotionally deep - the stuff of fine art!
