Merri River

In the flat coastal countryside home to pale eyed crow
The old Merri River crawls dark, deep and slow
The inspiration of the writers of song, story and rhyme
It was old very old back in the dreaming time
When the south west's first people had their corroborees
On warm summer evenings in the shade of the trees
By the river that they for had a different name
Long before the people from the north-lands to the far southern coastal lands came
But no sound of the didgeridoo by the Merri today
That time with it brings changes it is always this way
The age of the Merri anyone would not know
By middle island at Warrnambool into the Pacific it does flow
In the flat coastal countryside flowing forever more
On it's slow silent journey to the saltwater shore.
