My Doppleganger

I glance over my shoulder, but you’re not there
She who matches my face, my eyes, my hair
My mirror image that I have only seen
From time to time in my wildest dreams

My polar opposite, my altar ego
In some ways a carbon copy that only I know
There in my shadow, you lurk in my presence
Somehow you always a part of my essence

I lean to the left and you lean to my right
Managing always to avoid being in my sight
If anyone else has ever seen you; I’ve yet to learn
Of the trail in my footprints you’ve managed to burn

If I should shatter the mirror, breaking the glass
Would this afford us an opportunity to pass?
Each other just once to take a quick peak
Of one ever the stronger; and of one always the meek
