Nature Does Not Record

In all the grace
full, peace full
world of place,
I find no memory
of tragedy
or loss,
for nature
does not record
these things.
They are not
the thoughts
of animals or plants.
Only man
holds onto
the smell of blood
and mold.

But then I hear
the warning cry
of the ground squirrel.
What,
if not memory,
collective or otherwise?
Some knowledge
beyond our own.
Maybe,
the long story
of ground squirrel
tragedy,
told in their bloodline
or the touching
of noses.
