Another Glimpse Of Whitman

from 'Dreams and Visions'

I saw you, Walt, this morning
in the text of a speech by Dennis Kucinich—
saw you in his celebration of the humble
his exaltation of diversity
his call to live our highest ideals
and his repeated use
of 'we' and 'courage' and 'America.'

And I see you now as I walk this quiet park—
the delight I feel in grass that's patterned
by the summer sun and rich tree shade
in toddlers, brother and sister, who play in it
and in their dog with lolling tongue
a large and friendly fellow who from a distance
watches them and smiles.
