On The Beach

Where soul was eternal and memory from reality,
twenty years later I stop the little rented car I’m driving.
It’s late on a Saturday night,
it’s late in the history
of human endeavor.
The stars are still the stars,
the ocean is still its own music.

I’m thirty miles from somewhere else.
Our lifetime came and went.
It’s someone else’s turn now
to sit here and love all this
but I cannot resist the memories
and I stop and remember,
once, long ago, in an eternal moment,
you and I were here together –
when I poured out all I was
to love you
and wrote all this down
to make sure
someone knew
we were here.
