On The Brink

On the beach
Like many other couples they sat
Listening to the Black Sorrows
Playing for free
At the St. Kilda festival.

At one point
She drew his attention
In the dusk
To a vendor of Valentine roses
(It was the day before St. Valentine's Day)
In his basket
Were some illuminated artificial roses
And these had caught her eye

There was a short moment
When his mind went into a strategy evaluation mode:
On the one hand
He could merely nod
And comment on their novelty.
On the other
He could take an unknown leap
Buy her a rose
With all the sweet scented associated implications
And proclaim them to be - Lovers!

For a moment
A friendship teetered in the balance
Before coming down resoundingly
In favour of maintaining the status quo

'Yes, they are nice, ' he said
