Prestidigitation

Age never caught up
to her.
Oh, she grew old
and fell apart
but somehow
she could always
cock her hat
to one side
in her
inimitable way
and blow away
the years
like Autumn leaves,
revealing the fresh,
green, shoots
of her
still girlish
youth.

Nor did she keep herself
artificially young
with constant, desperate, obsessive,
exercise
or surgery.

She just had a knack
for tapping into something
startlingly fresh
when she was
absurdly old.

And then,
when we least expected
that spring
to dry up

she slipped
away,
Presto!
was dead,
instead,
and age
never did
catch up.
