Poem By Andrew Rose
Realisation can be a terrible occurrence,
I don’t think it’s supposed to work any other way.
Tonight was one of those occasions…
I stayed sober,
That’s a first,
Maybe that was the problem.
The normal and accustomed sense
Of viewing people and situations,
(That being the misleading drunken view)
That happy safety,
Was no more.
Being sober is also a terrible thing,
For me at least…
Maybe realisation is not terrible after all,
Just different and frightening,
It’ll just take time to adjust to.
I’ve always perceived change,
On the whole,
As a bad thing,
Nothing stays the same…
But now I’m not so sure,
It has its good points too.
You’ll always know where you stand with change,
Albeit by knowing exactly where you don’t stand.
(If that makes any sense) .
Although it may be hard to keep up at times,
When change changes too fast,
Speedy change keeps you on you’re toes,
Keeps you ever-alert and prepared,
Never trying to be something it’s not…
It’s subtle change you’ve got to be aware of!
Using unnoticeable stealth
It will make you believe nothings changing,
Putting you in a comfort zone;
That’s when it will gradually leave you behind.
Then it will hit you,
That terror that is realisation…
If only I’d realised sooner.
