See You Soon

Poem By Dónall Dempsey

Time wears
thin

becomes almost
see through

and I see through
to my Death.

A morning all constant
rain with little gusts of wind.

Rain nothing but rain
it seems

pinpricks of falling
as if sewing puddles to the ground

branches bejewelled
with nothing but diamond
raindrops.

Birds drip.

Not a good day for drying.

My ghost laughing
walking in its bare feet

mud squelching
between its toes

startles Death
who’s having a little nap

(I’m not due in ‘til one
and it’s only eight) .

I grin in passing
clap Death on the back.

“Nice one... Death...nice one! ”

“See you soon! ”

Death wipes
what appears
to be a tear

from a hollowed
socket

or then again

it could be

a raindrop.
