She Is Walking, Searching (May,2005)

She was walking, searching,

A little girl
with a dream,
a song, a smile
and a bright red balloon.

She was searching for a post,
Where she could tie,
the strings of her precious balloon.

She had colors all around,
Had rainbows,
The sky above was blue
ground beneath was green.

She was walking, searching,
The path became rough one day,
the last stretch of grass was past
she was still smiling and walking.

This she knew,
if she doesn’t find a post,
the string would slip away
And the balloon would be lost,

So she walked on.
She found a few post,
but could never tie the string.
either she didn’t know how to,
or may be the posts were broke.

She kept walking, searching
Through roads that no body took,
alone in a desert,
sand all around.

The ground beneath
was pale and dusty now
sky not so bright.

But she still smiled
In bafflement though,
Why can’t I find it?

She was walking, searching
cracking up inside,
loosing herself,
Quick sand all around.

She wanted to hold on
but all she had in hand
was sand,
all slipping away.

She was still walking,
asking questions
to never find answers.

She cried, till her tears dried,
heart and soul lost their strength,
like everything inside were flying out,
like she was disintegrating

she felt lighter,
like a dead fish,
she floated up.

A bullet could pass through
If you would shoot her,
She felt hollow,
She felt nothing more.

Its been a while walking,
still smiling,
would be sometime,
before she figures out
that the balloon is already lost.

Sanjukta, this is not a poem yet but with some work, it could be. Try not to use trite phrases 'starry eyes' 'songs in her heart' 'smile on her face' 'oh so precious'. You could cut some of the lines and still have a good poem. I have said this to others, but my philosophy is to write your poem, then try to boil it down to a crystal. This one has a wonderful idea in it, as said in your last stanza. I think it is worth some more work on your part. Good luck. Raynette
