Sheffield

There among the soot-stained glass, did fire and furnace bridge
And well below the ashes cast the soul of Vulcan lived.
Beyond the grey and melding clouds, with dull and tarnished hew
I see the tall and tempered towers come ranging into view.
Beneath the shoppers paradise the ghosts of titans dwell
And solid hearts of little men shine back with fond farewell.
What majesty of razor-sharp rose from their lifeblood spilt?
The earthy dust and stainless wire that forged an empire built.
My ancient past, it echoes back as I steel through your gate
And see my fathers’ laboured hours preserved in nickel plate.
