Slice Of Life
The stacked-up scrap of rusting metal railings,
Of asbestos sheets
Creates space for a small, murky enclosure.
A week back, the neighborhood cat
Delivered a litter of four kittens.
On a humid afternoon,
The tiny animals cuddle to sleep.
Beside the feline dwelling
Lie shreds of a carcass
Torn apart in a fury of hunger;
And a feather
That sways, not too high from the ground,
To the whims
Of the occasional breeze.
A token of the mid-day meal
The feather still whiffs a breath of life.
