Stratosphere

I dig my toes into sand
grab at the sky with both hands
Melt with me somewhere in between

Mocking gulls float above
Would that I be a cat
I’d teach you a thing or two about flight, my friends
Nine lives
and so nine deaths
One is quite enough for me

Their flight continues, unimpressed
I dig my toes in deeper
Is it for love of earth
or fear of heaven?
Reaching higher
stretched completely
and still I cannot reach you
A broken compass for a heart

I’d settle for the sun
doubting clouds of safety steam
that wouldn’t catch me if I fell
and I would fall

Beautiful. What is reached for is not really defined but is a matter of life and death. Then there is the title. Oh my! Robert
This is sweet, the human body as a bridge uniting heaven and earth. Childlike, also profound. 'Love of earth or fear of heaven' is a nice touch. I don't exactly know just how 'a broken compass for a heart' fits. (I'm sometimes challenged by imaginative flights, so it's not necessarily a flaw.)
