Poem Hunter
(15/07/56 / Curragh Camp, Co. Kildare, Eire.)

Climbing the hill
climbing into the sun

I(wounded in love)
staggered and fell

clutching you to my chest
rolling in heather together.

And you, saying: “This...
would be a good day to die
...happy as this! ”

And I saying: “I’d rather
live for you
...live with you! ”

And you going all coy
with a mock “Oh, my! ”

And you saying:
“Are you sure? ”

And me saying:
“Sure, I’m sure! ”

And you said:
“Can I think ‘bout it? ”

You give it a second’s thought
& smile.

“Sure! ”

And sure enough
you did

(and showed me a spare pair of panties
and toothbrush in your pocket)

“Just in case you asked...a girl has to be prepared! ”

I laughed

never so sure
of anything in all my life.
