The Blackness Of The Black Black Night

Poem By Shalom Freedman

The blackness of the black black black night
The blackness inside-
‘The wretch concentred all in self’
Why oh I oh I oh I?
A million times the question comes
Focusing only on number one.

Who are we
And what can we be
If we are only
‘me me me’?

The blackness of the black black night
The blackness deep deep inside
Why oh why oh why oh
Always always always ‘I’?

All I Wanted Was Poems

I didn’t want other kinds of words
I wanted poems
Because they helped me feel more alive
They gave me an intensity

Nothing Tells Me How To Begin Again

Nothing tells me how to begin again
Or even how to try
I am too old now
And how can I expect to do at the age of seventy- five?

I Must Continue To Write

There will always be another poem
And with that poem- hope
However absurd-
So even if I despair
