The Darkness Of This Night

It was a 'Dear John'
to the very letter
only now in text
with all the abbreviations
but that didn't make it
any better.
The words slithered
off the screen

and made their way
from my mobile
up my immobile arm
tears trying to hold them at bay.
The words crawled
into my eyes
and devoured
my senses

it was as if my feelings
were being eaten alive
and then the words
finding their way through to my brain
feasted upon it
like maggots
munching merrily away
on all my thoughts of love

only leaving
when I was a shell
my mind complete
& utter hell
hallowed out
like a pumpkin
awaiting Halloween

a false
cut-out smile
glowing in the dark
with only a guttering
for a brain

reminding myself
that time
heals all wounds
but right now
my brain has blown out
and there is only
the darkness of this night!
