The Day... The Soldiers Came

THE DAY THE SOLDIERS CAME

Disguised as a corpse

amongst corpses

I prayed to every

(although I did not believe

in any of them)

God

to let my live

be mine to live

the dead have faces

that are mother…brother

some have lost

the faces that they owned

homes

of people I have known

blaze

the soldier's laughter

high

on the killing

my eyelashes

trembling

seeing nothing seeing everything

my mother's face calmly burning

pee trickling

down my shattered left leg

the soldiers almost bored

a cackling radio commands them

to move on

advance like ants

I the only corpse

able to come back from the dead

drink in the darkness

of the new night.
