The First Christmas

A cave called a stable
for a king's nursery.
Enthroned in a feed box,
sheep and goats his court.

A young unwed mother,
her carpenter fiance,
their part in an eternal plan.
Newborn king's garments;
Mary gently wrapped him.

Months away, wise men trudged
desert storms and danger.
A new star, one never seen before,
led them they knew not where;
the King to find and worship.

In the hills, temple lambs slept safe.
Shepards watched, shook and stared.
The King's angel herald proclaimed;
fear not, I bring you good news.
Your Savior has come, go and see.

The Shepards ran, found him and bowed.
The lowest in Jewish eyes chosen first,
to see their King, the Lamb of God.
They rejoiced, returned to their flocks,
told all they met, 'Our Messiah has come! '
