The Law Of The Universe

The boy and the man are climbing the tree
hands holding to th neck-
laughing at the lower earth

Which way will it go
if I lean; what
are these feathers for

They settle against the knobby wood
looking at each other and touching
themselves and things in spring

Buds are beginning; cars honk
on their way; the dog runs
in circles below them

I have a wish, says the boy
and when I am as big as you
I'll help you climb the tree

This makes them both laugh again -
what does it mean, big; and
how will they get out of the tree
