The Lumpy Tattoo

Poem By MARINA GIPPS

Like a cancer it grows
until it loves you
like no other.
You wear black all the time,
a johnny cash existence.
You serenade prisoners
with tin cups
of urine.
I can't tell you
how many times
I've lied
to keep out of jail.
Pushing pins into skin,
filling with ink like parchment.
Sometimes it hurts
when you try
to excise it.
