The Mask Of Evil

On my wall hangs a Japanese carving,
The mask of an evil demon, decorated with gold lacquer.
Sympathetically I observe
The swollen veins of the forehead, indicating
What a strain it is to be evil.

Evil is generally regarded as a totally unsympathetic state; one is either evil, or not.Brecht's point is that people are not all good or bad, but a mixture of the two. Hence evil can be seen as the result of a conflict, and viewed as a bit of a strain.
