The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is so silent, no noise anymore.
A child not going to the penny candy store.
No child playing, no laughter or glee,
No one calling out to me.

The neighborhood is subdued and somewhat alone,
For the children like yearlings to new pastures roam.
Something happened to the neighborhood that day
When the last child departed to go far away.

Now the neighborhood is quite and free from care,
Yet, the pranks and jests it would gladly share,
If only the voices of the children they could hear
For one happy moment of a day of yesteryear.
